Addiction, Service Delivery, Trauma-Informed Care
October 2010
Dr. Stephanie Covington, co-director of both the Institute for Relational Development and the Center for Gender and Justice, examines the gendered history of addiction. Addiction has long been thought of as a “male” problem and we have developed a similarly male set of interventions. Dr. Covington outlines Women’s Integrated Treatment (WIT), an approach to treatment that acknowledges the universality of certain interventions, but addresses the complex and unique challenges of creating gender-responsive treatment environments.
