Dr. Thomas McLellan has been a career researcher for more than 40 years with the University of Pennsylvania and the Treatment Research Institute, which he co-founded in 1992. In his career he has published more than 500 articles and chapters on addiction research. Dr. McLellan has received several distinguished awards, including Life Achievement Awards from the American, Swedish, Italian, and British Societies of Addiction Medicine, and from the American Public Health Association.
From 2009 to 2011 Dr. McLellan was the Senate-confirmed Deputy Director of the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy, where he was one of the principal authors of the President’s National Drug Control Strategy. Dr. McLellan holds a Bachelor of Arts from Colgate University and a PhD from Bryn Mawr College. He received postgraduate training in psychology at Oxford University in England. Dr. McLellan is retired but continues to serve as Chairman of the TRI Board of Directors and is a member of the Board of Directors of Indivior Pharmaceuticals.
