Dr. Richard Lewanczuk, from Alberta Health Services and the University of Alberta, obtained his MD from the University of Alberta in 1983. He subsequently completed a rotating internship as well as Internal Medicine specialization and then entered a combined Endocrinology Fellowship / PhD in Medical Sciences at the University of Alberta. This was followed by post-doctoral studies in Montreal, Detroit and New York. In 1994 Dr. Lewanczuk returned to the University of Alberta to head the Hypertension Clinic and as a member of the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism, of which he was Director from 1998-2006. Currently Dr. Lewanczuk remains a Professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of Alberta. Dr. Lewanczuk was involved with the establishment of the Regional Diabetes Program in the Edmonton area beginning in 1999, and subsequently went on to be Medical Director for Chronic Disease Management in the previous Capital Health Region. He currently is the Senior Medical Director for Primary Care, Chronic Disease Management, Community and Rural for Alberta Health Services. In this portfolio he oversees delivery of both primary care and chronic disease management services in the province as well as delivery of health care in rural areas.
